Last year Washburn ended McDonell's season. In the rematch, the Macks would not be denied a birth at state. Despite an early deficit and foul trouble throughout, McDonell (25-2, 13-1 Western Cloverbelt Conference) battled relentlessly, eventually felling the Castle Guards (25-2, 15-1 Indianhead).
McDonell was led by career-high 27 points from junior Grayson Knowlton. Fellow junior Alex Ohde was close behind with 20 points. Senior Ben Retzlaff added 14, including nine in the second half.
