2/28/23 WIAA Division 5 Basketball Regional Quarterfinal: (1) McDonell Macks 77, (16) Gilman 14

After earning a #1 seed, the Macks (24-1, 13-1 Western Cloverbelt Conference) looked the part against the youthful Pirates (0-23, 0-14 Eastern Cloverbelt Conference), overwhelming Gilman with relentless defensive pressure and allowing just 9 points by halftime.

The intensity continued into the second half, regardless of who saw the floor, as McDonell got every single player in on the action and placed ten in the scoring column. Gilman fought hard throughout but simply could not keep up, as the Macks cruised to a running clock victory and moved on to the Regional Semi-Final.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Senior guard Eddie Mittermeyer poured in 21 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, while fellow senior Canan Huss tallied all 17 of his points before the break. Junior forward Miles Flanagan had a strong second half and chipped in 12 on the night.

2/25/23 WIAA Division 5 Basketball Regional Final: (2) McDonell Lady Macks 61, (3) Turtle Lake 44

On a quest for their third consecutive regional title, the second-seeded Lady Macks (22-5, 14-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) traded a few early blows with the Lakers (21-5, 17-1 Lakeland - West Conference), but steadily extended their advantage to as many as 15, before a late Turtle Lake surge cut the deficit to nine by the break.

In the second half, McDonell got a huge offensive spark from Emily Cooper, who scored 11 of their first 13 points after halftime. As a team, the Lady Macks' relentless effort defensively prevented Turtle Lake from ever mounting a serious threat to the lead, and McDonell once again cut down the nets in their final home game of the season.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Junior guard Emily Cooper splashed five threes as she poured in a game-high 25, while junior center Aubrey Dorn contributed 13 in another strong effort, and senior guard/forward Marley Hughes added eight while patrolling both ends of the floor.

2/25/23 Basketball: Eau Claire Memorial-84 Chippewa Falls Boys-69

Our podcast begins with the overtime of the JV game won by Chippewa Falls, 66-65, capping off a terrific season-ending comeback.

In the main event, CF(14-10, 8-6) got out to an 8-0 lead at Eau Claire Memorial(19-5, 12-2), and led 23-19 before the Abes went on a 12-0 run, and eventually led 39-29. However,CF, led by Mason Monarski, fought back to tie the game one last time at 42, before going into the half down 45-42.

ECM scored first in the 2nd half and CF never got closer than four on their way to a 84-69 road loss, snapping their eight-game winning streak.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch: Mason Monarski poured in 39 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss. Fellow senior, Christian Crumbaker, added 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, as he continues to work his way back from an injury.

2/24/23 WIAA Division 5 Basketball Regional Semi-Final: (2) McDonell Lady Macks 65, (10) Owen-Withee 34

After a snowstorm cancelled school and prevented practice, the second-seeded Lady Macks (21-5, 14-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) started a little slower than they might have liked against the youthful and talented Blackhawks (9-15, 5-9 Eastern Cloverbelt Conference), but soon saw their relentless pressure defense pay dividends.

In the second half, McDonell rotated subs often, and again every player who suited up saw action. Also for the second game in a row, ten Lady Macks entered the scoring column, as they pulled away from Owen-Withee and punched their ticket to the Regional Final.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Junior center Aubrey Dorn scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the first half to pace the Lady Macks, while junior guard Emily Cooper returned to action and finished with 13 points and a trio of threes. Junior guard Maddie Geissler tallied all 8 of her points in the second half.

As their playoff quest began, the second-seeded Lady Macks (20-5, 14-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) came out of the gate with fire and fury defensively, quickly overwhelming the Hilltoppers (1-24, 0-14 Dunn-St.Croix Conference), and roaring to 53 points by halftime.

In the second half, McDonell continued to substitute frequently, as every player dressed saw the floor. Ten Lady Macks entered the scoring column on their way to an emphatic, running clock victory.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Junior center Aubrey Dorn scored 17 points to lead the way for the Lady Macks, while junior guard Kylee Jensen tallied a season-high 15, and fellow junior Emily Thaler also achieved a season-high, finishing with 14. 2/18/23 Basketball: Neillsville 46, McDonell Lady Macks 34

On the road for their regular season finale and the Cloverbelt Conference Crossover game, the Lady Macks (19-5, 14-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) found themselves shorthanded and facing one of the top Division 4 teams in the state in the Warriors (24-0, 14-0 Eastern Cloverbelt Conference). Despite missing multiple starters, McDonell showed their grit throughout and trailed by just 3 points at halftime.

After the half, the Neillsville defense made life especially difficult for the Lady Macks, who battled significant foul trouble almost immediately and could never fully get back into the game.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Junior center Aubrey Dorn played hard in the paint and was the lone Lady Macks player in double figures, tallying 10, while senior guard/forward Marley Hughes hit two big threes and finished with eight points on the night.

2/17/23 Basketball: McDonell Macks 65, Thorp 54

On the road with a conference title at stake, the McDonell Macks (22-1, 13-1 Western Cloverbelt Conference) traded a few early punches with the Cardinals (5-17, 4-10 WCC), who cut a 12 point Macks lead to just seven at the break.

In the second, McDonell couldn't quite manage to separate themselves from their opponent, watching their double-digit advantage evaporate down to a single possession, but never allowing Thorp to take the lead. A late push by the veteran Macks secured the victory, as well as an outright Western Cloverbelt Conference championship.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Senior guard/forward Canan Huss took charge in the second half, scoring 14 of his game-high 25 points, while senior guard Eddie Mittermeyer did the heavy lifting on a 12-0 run in the first half and ended the game with 17. Fellow senior guard Aidan Misfeldt helped ice the game down the stretch and tallied 14 on the night.
