Inside the beautiful Sonnentag Fieldhouse in Eau Claire, the Lady Macks (1-0, 0-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) got their season started in a non-conference battle with the Railroaders (0-1, 0-0 Middle Border Conference), a team that took them to extra innings the previous year.
McDonell roared out of the gate offensively, plating 7 runs in the bottom of the first. Altoona had a ready answer, responding with 7 runs of their own in the top of the second.
As the pitchers settled in, the game outcome remained in the balance, but the Lady Macks made enough plays on both offense and defense to create some separation down the stretch.
Junior second baseman Aleah Bowe accounted for 3 RBIs, while freshman Ella Amodt and junior Miranda Johnson drove in two apiece. Juniors Claire Ruf, Kelsey Bremness, and Lizzy Leibrandt each collected a pair of hits.
Junior pitcher Kelsey Bremness struck out four batters, while fellow junior Rylie Christianson played strong defense in center field before taking the circle in the 4th, fanning two in a crucial 5th inning.
