5/30/24 WIAA Division 1 Softball Sectional Final: #2 New Richmond 1, #4 Chippewa Falls Lady Cardinals 0

Meeting New Richmond for the third time in 2024, this time in a Sectional Final with a trip to the state tournament on the line, the Lady Cards (24-6, 11-3 Big Rivers Conference) went toe-to-toe with the Tigers (21-3, 12-2 BRC), in a ferocious battle of two incredibly talented teams.

It was a pitchers' duel for the first 5 1/2 innings, as both teams had scoring chances but neither could plate a run. With two outs in the bottom of the 6th, however, New Richmond got a lone run across, which proved to be the difference.

A salute to this year's senior class: Bella Biederman, Briella Bierman, Mykle Buhrow, Kenna Johnston, Katja Maurer, Lakken McEathron, Emma Mcllquham, Olivia Sanborn, and Paige Steinmetz.

Thank you for all you've done for the Lady Cards program! Tradition never graduates.

5/28/24 WIAA Division 4 Softball Sectional Semi-Final: #1 Fall Creek 6, #2 McDonell Lady Macks 3

In another battle of two state-ranked squads, the Lady Macks (20-3, 12-2 Western Cloverbelt Conference) faced a team in the Crickets (27-2, 14-0 WCC) who had handed them their only two losses of the year.

It was a pitchers' duel to start, as no baserunner got beyond first until the bottom of the third inning. That's when Fall Creek broke through with four runs, all with two outs.

The Lady Macks fought back in the top of the fourth, plating three runs of their own.

The veteran Crickets lineup slowly pulled away, however, and McDonell's stellar season came to an end with their first Division 4 tournament ending at the Sectional level.

A salute to this year's incredible senior class: Abby Bresina, Aubrey Dorn, Katie Ruf, and Morgan Wirtz. Thank you for all you've done for the Lady Macks program, for your school, and in our community! You've left an indelible mark, and you will be greatly missed!

5/28/24 WIAA Division 1 Softball Sectional Semi-Final: #4-Chippewa Falls-9 #1-Stevens Point-5

Great pitching and tremendous hitting powered the Lady Cards (24-5) to a 9-5 win over Stevens Point (23-3) and a trip to Thursday's Sectional Final vs. New Richmond.

Freshman Violet McIlquham gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings and Senior Lakken McEathron shut the door on the Panthers in the final 1 2/3's to get the save. Meanwhile, Senior SS, Kenna Johnston, led the hit parade with three hits including a three-run HR in the 6th to give Chi-Hi a 7-3 lead.

The Lady Cards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st - scoring all their runs with two outs - and they never trailed or were tied the rest of the game.

5/26/24 CVTW: When Will Eau Claire Hospitals Get The $15 Million They Were Promised?

                                                                 Chippewa Valley This Week

Jeff Smith(D-Eau Claire) Jesse James(R-Altoona)

State Senators Jesse James(R-Altoona) and Jeff Smith(D-Eau Claire) offer their take on the ongoing wait for a promised $15 million for Eau Claire's remaining hospitals after the sudden closing of HSHS hospitals in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls March 22nd. James and other Republicans have taken exception to Gov. Evers' vetoing of a bill they passed intending to help the emergency rooms of the Chippewa Valley's remaining hospitals. Smith says Republicans made this political from the outset by not including area Democrats like himself and State Rep. Jodi Emerson(D-Eau Claire) in the bill. Gov. Evers' changes would've allowed the $15 million to be used for things like OBGYN care and mental health resources. Area GOP rep's took special exception to the Governor's changes because it would've allowed the money to be used outside of Eau Claire and Chippewa county as well.

5/23/24 WIAA Division 4 Softball Regional Final: #2 McDonell Lady Macks 10, #3 Colfax 0 (6 innings)

In a battle of two state-ranked squads, the Lady Macks (20-2, 12-2 Western Cloverbelt Conference) faced a deep and talented lineup in the Vikings (20-4, 14-0 Dunn-St. Croix Conference).

McDonell pitcher Katie Ruf was simply spectacular, striking out a dozen batters before a ball was even put in play - a pop-up which she promptly caught. For the game, the senior allowed just one base runner (via a walk) and struck out 15 Colfax batters in a dominant no-hitter.

At the plate, a number of Lady Macks brought their "A" game, including freshman center fielder Rylie Christenson-Richardson, who went 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and junior left fielder Kendall Hepfler, who finished 3-4 with a pair of doubles as the Lady Macks emphatically earned a Division 4 Regional Championship.

5/21/24 WIAA Division 4 Softball Regional Semi-Final: #2 McDonell Lady Macks 15, #7 Augusta 0 (4 innings)

In their playoff opener, the Lady Macks (19-2, 12-2 Western Cloverbelt Conference) faced a young but talented team in the Beavers (8-13, 5-8 Large Dairyland Conference), who were riding high after their program's first playoff victory in five years.

McDonell senior pitcher Katie Ruf quickly slammed the door on Augusta's hope of an upset, striking out 7 of the first 9 batters she faced.

The Lady Macks led 9-0 when the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth because of lightning. After a gap in the stormy weather appeared - and thanks to a lot of hard work from coaches on both sides - the surface at Casper was made playable again and McDonell made the most of it, plating 6 runs in the fourth to end the game by run rule.

Ruf finished with 9 Ks in a four-inning no-hitter, while the McDonell offense was led by freshman shortstop Kelsey Bremness, who went 3 for 3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs, while her fellow freshman, center fielder Rylie Christenson-Richardson, was 2-2 with a pair of walks and three runs scored, matching the tally of junior left fielder Kendall Hepfler.

5/20/24 WIAA Division 1 Softball Regional Semi-Final: #4 Chippewa Falls 9, #13 River Falls 1

Playing a day ahead of schedule because of impending bad weather, the Lady Cardinals (22-5, 11-3 Big Rivers Conference) came out of the gate strong against the Wildcats (8-17, 2-12 BRC), their opponent for a third consecutive game.

Freshman pitcher Violet Mcllquham set the tone early, sending down two of the top three River Falls batters via strikeout as she worked a 1-2-3 top of the first. The offense preceded to back her up, sending 10 to the plate in the bottom of the first and plating four runs.

As both teams settled in, Chi-Hi added two more in the second and fifth innings, before a final insurance run in the 6th.

Senior left fielder Olivia Sanborn went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead the team in hits, freshman third baseman Georgia Romanowski was 2-2 with an RBI and pair of walks, and sophomore catcher Lauren Shepherd had a big solo homer in the second. Mcllquham pitched 6 innings of one-run ball - including a key strikeout with the bases loaded - and finished with 8 Ks on the day. Senior pitcher Lakken McEathron entered in the 7th and sent the Wildcats down in sequence, including two punchouts.

The Lady Cards will advance to the Regional Final on Thursday to play the winner of #5 Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln vs. #12 Wausau East.

Chippewa Falls(12-10) came from behind to win both games of the home doubleheader over Wausau West(3-15) by scores of 8-7 and 5-4.

In game one the Cards overcame a 7-2 deficit with one out in the bottom of the 7th after WW starter, Ty Teske, had to leave the game after reaching the 100-pitch mark. CF turned four singles, two walks, a hit batsman, and a passed ball off three Warriors relievers into six runs and a surprising win.

5/16/24 Baseball: McDonell Macks 14, Cadott 7

On the road for Cadott's Senior Night at Casper Park, the Macks (5-11, 3-9 Western Cloverbelt Conference) looked to play spoiler against the Hornets (5-11, 3-8 WCC), scoring the first three runs of the game and leading 6-1 going into the bottom of the third.

Cadott made a comeback bid with a big bottom of the third frame that included a pair of towering two-run homers, but McDonell answered back, plating three runs their next time up and continuing to keep the Hornets at arm's length down the stretch.

The Macks got strong pitching performances from sophomore Cael Holm and junior Cooper Mittermeyer, and the bottom of the batting order came through big, with the six through nine hitters scoring 10 of the team's 14 runs and accounting for six RBIs as well.
