12/29/23 Basketball: McDonell Macks 55, Athens 50

In the finale of the 2nd Annual Denny Laramy Holiday Classic, the Macks (6-2, 3-1 Western Cloverbelt Conference) started a little slow offensively, as the Bluejays (4-5, 2-3 Marawood - North Conference), came out of the gate firing, pushing out to an eight-point advantage and carrying a four-point lead into the locker room.

After the break the Macks tightened up defensively and eventually the offense found some rhythm as well, as McDonell battled back to take the lead. In the final minutes some key defensive stops sealed the win, as the Macks finished 2-0 at the tournament and gave Coach Adam Schilling a victory on his birthday.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Sophomore forward Karson Galvez absolutely caught fire from long range in the second half, knocking down five of his game-high six threes and tallying 17 of a career-high 26 points.

12/29/23 Basketball: McDonell Lady Macks 75, Athens 34

Returning to action one day after a dominant performance on the first day of action at the 2nd Annual Denny Laramy Holiday Classic, the Lady Macks (12-0, 5-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) again started fast, setting the shorthanded Bluejays (7-6, 6-1 Marawood - North Conference) back on their heels as McDonell built a double digit lead in short order..

In the second half, the Lady Macks continued to exert pressure defense on Athens, forcing dozens of turnovers throughout the course of the game and scoring layup after layup in transition. A running clock brought the game to a fairly quick close, as McDonell neared the halfway point of the season with their winning streak intact.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Senior point guard Emily Cooper rained in four threes in the first half and finished with a game-high 20 points, while freshman guard EllaMay Cooper tallied 13 of her 15 points in a strong first half. Senior center Aubrey Dorn was a force defensively and on the glass, and was the third Lady Macks player in double figures, finishing with 13.

12/28/23 Basketball: McDonell Lady Macks 71, St. Croix Central 23

Facing a Division 3 opponent in their first matchup of the 2nd Annual Denny Laramy Holiday Classic, the Lady Macks (11-0, 5-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) pulled away very early from the Panthers (5-6, 1-3 Middle Border Conference), who did not score a single point until close to the midway point of the first half.

Substituting very freely throughout, McDonell continued to impress on both ends of the floor as they put three players in double figures, had three others tally eight points, and cruised to a dominant, running clock victory.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Freshman guard EllaMay Cooper led the way for McDonell with 16 points, while her older sister Emily, despite facing a defense designed to contain her, was close behind with 12. Senior guard Isabel Hartman netted another double-digit performance, tallying 10.

12/28/23 Basketball: McDonell Macks 52, Ladysmith 43

In their first game of the 2nd Annual Denny Laramy Holiday Classic, the Macks (5-2, 3-1 Western Cloverbelt Conference) were a little slow out of the gate offensively, as were the Lumberjacks (5-2, 4-1 Heart O'North Conference), as neither team could stretch their advantage to more than two possessions throughout the first half.

Out of the gate in the second half, McDonell struggled initially with the Ladysmith pressure defense, surrendering the lead on a couple of occasions in a back-and-forth, tightly contested fight. In the final minutes, however, the Macks hit timely baskets and proved their mettle from the free throw line, vaulting themselves to the title game of the tournament.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Junior guard Jordan Sikora led the way for the Macks with 16 points, including a very strong first half, while sophomore forward Karson Galvez scored all 12 of his points after the break in a strong second half effort. Junior guard Cooper Mittermeyer knocked in a trio of treys, including finishing two four-point plays.
